Does anyone know how to make the crochet kufi that turns into a purse with the ribbon?

I can't remember the name of the company...but there is a company that has a patent on that type of craft...Now that's a touchy hot topic to most crafters....but I don't know that you will want to focus on making them for a business KWIM... But I think for the most part it's how you lace ribbon through the hat that makes it able to pull closed. HTH

Do this at your own risk. The owner of this business, I've had run ins with. Apprently they are "patent pending." Owner is also sueing a lady that has been selling her hats in this way. I do shows where she has a kiosk and am not allowed to sell my hats even put together. Can sell the hats and flowers separate, but not the ribbons. I don't advertise that my hats become purses (never have), but what the customer does with them is all up to them. I'm just warning you now

apparently she received her patent on june 1st of this year. This is totally rediculous. I can not believe she was able to get one so quickly on something that WAS NOT HER IDEA. Seriously!!!! I had the same idea and had never seen them before, till I mentioned something on here... This just opens flood gates to a whole bunch of drama.

lollitops is the boutique that has a patent/copy right on that.

I was told it took her 18 months?? They usually only take 3 months, but like you said it wasn't her idea. So from what I gather, she has had to rewrite the thing over and over. I was told if a lot of us go together and paid a lawyer we could easily have the thing over turned. But I'm sure it's not cheap to do, plus you have to have a rep.

Oh MY GOODNESS!!!! She has raised her prices even more!!! How can anyone actually sell a kufi and a flower w/ some ribbon for $35 to $40?!!! How can she actually sleep at night charging that much and ripping people off!!! I understand were all here for making a small profit, but seriously?!

i would not want to use it as a hat after using it for a purse. i think they are also a lawsuit in the making with the ribbon that long. an infant/toddler can easily strangle themselves with the ribbon.

I am with you on this one....the first time I saw that hat I was thinking it was a big risk for babies and toddlers!

Thats exactly what I thought too. My hubby last night was like wait till a baby dies from it and takes her for everything she has. Hopefully for a babies sake that wont ever happen, but it would be nice to have it come back on her some way....

This was exactly my thought. The danger factor and the gross factor both play a part in this "invention" (if that's what she wants to call it). Maybe I'll go and patent my style of stacked bow - yeah right :001_rolleyes:

well, i was thinking about patenting my style of flowers on klippies,.. (which the spelling is also my style...lol) tutu halter dresses, bow holders, and just bows in general and the rest of you can kiss it....lol Seriously though, I really dont understand how she could have gotten the patent on that, its a craft item, its been around for years, and everyone makes them.

I had never seen these until today. I think $35-$40 is ridiculous!!! I agree with some other posts that it is a craft item made with items everyone has so why can she get it patented. And her prices on her site o my goodness. ppl are crazy if they pay that much. I honestly hate it when ppl rip off their customers. I also think that ribbon that long is a health risk. I dont wish ill on anyone who is making money to provide for their families but seriously being greedy never pays off in the end.

Well you might not be able to patent "klippies" but you sure can trademark the word....And that's the truth there are quite a few of bow ladies that have trademarked their phrase for types of bows and clips etc.

You know, to me its just not worth it. Im not here to steal anything from anyone or prevent someone else from making something, I just want to help supplement my family since I stay home, and it gives me something to do while the hubby is either away on orders or playing his stupid video game. I enjoy being here on this forum and becoming friends with all of you ladies, not trying to sue someone so I could make the buck... kwim?

Agreed. I could patent and trademark whatever I wanted, but then I'd have to play "police man" to make sure no one took what was mine... that's NOT what I want to spend my days doing. Starting lawsuits, threatening people, looking like this big jerk all the time. I have better things to do with my time. Now, if people are directly stealing from my site like word for word, or photos, then I'm going to say something whether i have a patent or not

Gosh I just can't believe how much she is charging. Wonder if people are actually purchaing the hats at that price?

BusyBumbleBee

Oh yes they do. She has a kiosk at an upscale mall, I'm sure she is making that kiosk fee back and then some to keep having it there. She does a lot of wholesaling too I believe.
Here's my thinking on this matter. Some people are good at the creative end and some people are good at the business end. So it doesn't matter if this concept isn't new, she has a good business sense (and probably $$) which is why her products is successful. If I took one item and maketed till I couldn't breath anymore, I'm sure it would have a chance at being successful. But I enjoy making all kinds of stuff, so I don't have the time to dedicate to marketing really. I'd just hope that my bows would do the talking and so would my customers that repeat to other's where they got their beautiful hair accessories. That's how most of us do it.
These hats will be dead and gone in a matter of time and so will her business, while the rest of us will be keeping up with the trends and being fashion forwarad. :girly:
Do I sound like I've thought about this before?

All I have to say is someone is insane for paying her prices and how can I get them to shop with me!! :D I do agree I think that long ribbon is a definate chocking/stranglation risk. I really think that its nuts that she can actually sue someone for making that. Glad I am in Vegas she can't catch me....LOL!!

That is my thought exactly. That kind of hat trend is gonna fizzle out and she is gonna be left holding onto her patten. I did see where she is putting ribbon on the bottom of leggings and charging a fortune, so I guess that will be the next thing she tries to patten and prevent us from making....ugh... seriously.... some people!!

I've thought about doing this with some leggings, they look adorable under tutus. Yeah, better watch out though - these might be pattened by you know who... :o

ok ladies i had a lawyer friend look at this and he said, that yes she has a patten, but does not have the copt right. Thats great news, with out the copy right anyone can make these and sell these, he said every go into the store and only see 1 type of toothbrush? unless she holds the copy right, then its free game.. and also where i am at South Korea has no trademark or copyright laws, so By korean law i can make thses and sell these over here and even sell them on ebay if i wanted too. She is charging $36 for something i can make for About $1.25, man I could get rich.

So much for being a good "business person" like I said before. Gotta cover all your bases lady. She still threatens people a lot. I have better things to worry about, you go ahead and threaten and threaten, life is too short. MOVING ON

I checked out her website .. she must have $$$ backing her. She had a pic of Madonna's child wearing her stuff ... she wouldn't be able to do that without permission. I say "Whatever" ... just not fair to your girls that live close by and like I said before ... her clientelle probably isn't yours anyway. Keep doing what you are doing and feel good about it!!
